Match Report: Nomads (A)

Written by Sab Muthusamy
Llandudno produced a spirited and determined performance in difficult, blustery conditions in Flint but ultimately fell to a 2-0 defeat against Connahs Quay Nomads. The Seasiders showed tremendous resilience and organisation, particularly after being reduced to ten men before half time, and ensured the hosts had to work hard for their victory.
Buoyed by their Welsh Cup victory over Llannefydd last week, Jordan Hadaway’s side arrived looking to build on the encouraging spells they have produced against strong opposition this season. Facing a Nomads side competing at the top end of the table was always going to be a stern test, but Llandudno showed they were ready to meet the challenge.
The afternoon began in the worst possible fashion when Callum West put the hosts ahead after just 23 seconds. Jordan Hodkin advanced down the left before the ball was worked through Harry Franklin to Callum West, who finished to give Nomads an early advantage.
Rather than allowing the setback to dictate the game, Llandudno responded positively and gradually settled into their rhythm. Anthony Stephens helped lead a disciplined midfield display, breaking up play and disrupting the hosts’ attempts to build momentum. The Seasiders also recognised the opportunities offered by set pieces, with Tom Stephens presented with a promising chance midway through the first half following a free kick into the box.
With the wind making conditions difficult for both teams, clear chances were limited. Llandudno defended resolutely, remained compact and worked tirelessly to restrict the space available to the hosts. Their response to the early goal was particularly encouraging as they grew in confidence and competed well across the pitch.
The game took another difficult turn ten minutes before the interval when Jayden Lloyd received a straight red card following a heavy challenge on Frankie Deane. With more than half the match still to play, Llandudno faced an uphill battle, but their determination never wavered. They stayed organised and continued to frustrate Nomads, while Joel Terrance produced an excellent one handed save to deny Harry Franklin shortly before the break. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Seasiders remained firmly in the contest at half time.
That same resolve carried into the second half. Llandudno continued to work for one another, maintaining their shape and forcing Nomads into longer passes rather than allowing them to play through the lines. Their discipline and commitment kept hopes alive of finding a route back into the game.
The hosts eventually made their extra man count when Harry Franklin doubled the lead with a precise finish following a move involving Callum West on the edge of the box. It was a frustrating blow for Llandudno after the effort they had put into staying in contention.
Even at two goals down, the Seasiders continued to battle and showed glimpses of attacking intent in the closing minutes, although they were unable to find a breakthrough. The result was disappointing, but the performance offered plenty of encouragement. Against strong opposition and with ten men for much of the afternoon, Hadaway’s side demonstrated character, defensive discipline and a willingness to compete until the final whistle.
The travelling Llandudno supporters also deserve immense credit for backing their side throughout the afternoon despite the challenging weather conditions.
Next up for Llandudno is a trip to Briton Ferry Llansawel.
