Llandudno Football Club vs Whitchurch Alport
By Sam Williams
Narrow Defeat In First Pre-Season Game
Llandudno Football Club got their pre-season underway yesterday with a narrow defeat to Whitchurch Alport who stole victory with a late looping header.
Iwan Williams fielded almost two completely different sides for each half with 20 players all featuring in the game, including three trialists against the North West Counties League side.
Llandudno dominated the first half in terms of possession as Whitchurch sat tight and kept shape well throughout, but the two lines of Alport were difficult to breakdown and Town were unable to create a clear cut opportunity in the opening 45mins. Plenty of free kicks were won in and around the penalty area but the new look side were unable to test the visiting goalkeeper, and the teams went in at the break level.
After ringing the changes second half the game continued with much of the same with Llandudno comfortable in possession, and Whitchurch happy to soak up the pressure and keep their shape tight at the back and look for an opportunity on the counter. With just over an hour played Kai Edwards brought the ball out from the back and the opposition sat off, with 30 yards to goal the centre half tried his luck and his effort looked to be nestling in to the bottom corner, but for the keeper to make a good stop and keep the score at 0-0.
With 10mins to go on the clock Whitchurch win a free kick from deep and play a ball in to the box with their player climbing highest to win the header and it loops over the advancing Tom Lewney in the Llandudno net. 1-0 to the visitors!
Toby Jones tried to create something out of nothing and he works a chance well with some good link up play with one of the trialists, but his outstretched effort can’t generate enough power to trouble the Alport keeper. The final whistle blows and the game ends 1-0.
A good test from Whitchurch Alport and we welcome their fellow league opposition 1874 Northwich here to The Giant Hospitality Stadium next Saturday, 14th July, in a 2.30pm Kick Off.
