Llandudno Defeat Connah's Quay To Make It Three From Three
On a rare hot day at The Giant Hospitality Stadium it was dubbed the fixture of the weekend as both ourselves and Connah’s Quay battled it out with both teams having won two from two in their opening fixtures.
Not too much happened in the opening 20 minutes with both teams looking to dominate the early aerial battles, Llandudno were going toe to toe and defending resolutely, and trying to play football on the break.
That all changed when Llandudno had their first clear opportunity in front of goal as Toby Jones slipped in behind and was brought down from Michael Pearson in the box which resulted in a sending off for the Connah’s Quay centre half and a penalty for Llandudno.
Sam Hart steps up for his third penalty of the season but unfortunately could only put this one wide! Connah’s Quay reduced to ten men but it remains 0-0.
Llandudno stepped up their game now with Connah’s Quay on the back foot following the sending off, an opportunity came knocking quickly as Danny Hughes goes on a long run down the right channel, picks the ball up and turns two opponents inside out before pulling the back to Marc Williams who made a run in to the box but the defence pipped him to the ball to see it out for a corner.
Llandudno with the next opportunity again in front of goal as good work down the left this time from James Joyce who finds Marc Williams with a diving header in front of goal which takes a deflection and goes out for another corner.
HT Llandudno 0-0 Nomads
Second half underway and Llandudno try to start on the front foot again as they search for an opening goal against ten man Connah’s Quay, not too many clear cut chances in the first quarter hour of the second half but you could see the game opening up for Llandudno, and the breakthrough looked as though it was about to be broken just after the hour mark. Fantastic football from the home team as Danny Hughes and Toby Jones link up, before a clever flick to Marc Williams who is in on goal and his effort looked certain to nestle in the back of the net, only for a great save from John Danby to deny him with his legs.
Connah’s Quay break minutes later and Michael Wilde uses his body to turn in the box and rifles an effort from an angle at Robert’s goal, only to see it rattle off the crossbar and back in to play before Llandudno are able to clear.
With 20 minutes remaining Mike Williams searches for the run of Toby Jones with a great header from deep but Toby can’t quite on to the initial pass, Horan tried to head back to Danby and they got it all wrong between them and credit to Toby Jones who continued his run and managed to sneak in behind and fire the ball in to the empty net! 1-0 Llandudno! A deserved lead.
Lee Thomas and Sam Ilesanmi were introduced to the field in the remainder of the game with Thomas’ first piece of action having to throw his body on the line in front of his goal to deny Connah’s Quay an equaliser, but it was Ilesanmi who had the last chance of the game as he drove through the defence and left Phillips in his wake before drilling an effort low at Danby but from a tight angle and denied.
